Facebook contest apps examples you should see!

As a Community Manager, you’re likely to be organizing some Facebook Contests in the near future. And, like everyone else in the market, you’re looking to find THE best way to generate engagement and animation on your page. The first step is choosing the right Facebook contest app to fit your goals.  Are you looking to recruit new fans, provide a service, or nurture the community you have?  Depending on what you’re hoping to accomplish, there are plenty of apps to choose from.  Here are some “inspirations” to help you create the best contest for your brand’s Facebook Page.

Sweepstakes :

Type of App: Sweepstakes with one daily draw
Industry: Gaming
Size of FanPage: 27K Fans
Campaign duration: 5 days
Prizes offered: 5 copies of the game (value: $500)
Number of participants: 4,000

Why we picked this campaign: we love video games, and good examples. čśë  A Sweepstakes is a perfect choice for launching a new product and recruiting new fans. They’re also simple and easy to set up for a busy marketer on a time crunch.

This page is dedicated to gamers: nothing more normal than offering the last Splinter Cell game thanks to the Sweepstakes app.

On the flip side, Sweepstakes aren’t great for entertaining your fans or building a strong lasting relationship.  If you’re brand is new or if you’re offering a new product, a Sweepstakes is the right tool for introducing yourself.

Here are 8 things you need to know before running a sweepstakes app on Facebook.

Instant Win

Type of App: Instant-win multi-language.
Industry: Travel
Size of FanPage: 20K Fans
Campaign duration: 10 days
Prizes offered: Photo album creation
Number of participants: 2,500

Why we picked this campaign: It’s a good example concerning the choice of prizes: consistent, small and many. A partner is involved, providing an interesting (and successful) case of partnerships in contests.

An Instant-win game organized between a Tourism brand and a photo album creation company. Great deal!

Like the Sweepstakes, Instant Win games are great for recruiting new fans or promoting new brands or products.  Sweepstakes participants have to wait until the next draw to find out if they’ve won or not.  Instant Win games provide instant gratification and can be addictive- fans will return to play again and again.  Sweepstakes generally offer fewer, more valuable prizes.  Instant win games keep the momentum going by offering smaller prizes in higher quantity.  Do you have a lot of small prizes but aren’t sure how to offer them? You should think about the Instant-Win app to create some fun on your Facebook page.

Photo Contest

Type of App: Photo Contest with votes (moderation ON)
Industry: Tourism / Hotel
Size of FanPage: 10K Fans
Campaign duration: 50 days
Prizes offered: Photo album creation
Number of participants: 180 photos / 4,000 votes

Why we picked this campaign: This small business’ photo contest provides a perfect example of what hotels can do. The prize is related to services offered by the hotel- a good way to attract genuine fans, avoid fraud and boost business for the hotel.

In this example, the Hotel had a lot of participants (see number of votes!). These prizes which are well defined (such as the spa), are limited to services that this hotel provides.

Photo contests provide fun, entertaining chances for engagement between the brand and their fans, and between fans of the brand.  Once your sweepstakes or instant win game have established your brand or products, try a photo contest nurture your community.  This campaign was smart by keeping the prizes brand specific.  This is a must to avoid fraud and attract genuine fans to your page who will stay with you over time.

Type of App: Quiz
Industry: Consumer goods
Size of FanPage: 110K Fans
Campaign duration: 3 weeks
Prizes offered: Latest product
Number of participants: 8,000 participants

Why we picked this campaign: This quiz is about the history of the brand. It’s a good challenge to fans and allows them to learn more about the brand.

Show you know Kusmi tea and get a chance to win their last product!

Quizzes are a great engagement tool, and the go to app for B2B’s struggling to build social interactions.  A quiz won’t recruit like a sweepstakes or instant win game, but it will engage and nurture community like a photo contest as shown in this example.

Personality test

Type of App: Personality Test
Industry: Consumer Goods (Hair products)
Size of FanPage: 80K Fans
Campaign duration: 1 month
Prizes offered: Latest product
Number of participants: 5,500 participants

Why we picked this campaign: Covers several products, performs a service by advising fans which products may be right for them.

hair personality testPersonality tests are fun and engaging for any brand in any industry.  This campaign is a perfect example of how brands with wide ranging products can provide a service to potential customers while promoting brand awareness and nurturing community around the products.

And you, what’s your business and what kind of app has best served your needs?
